Little League Month: Healthy Snacks to Bring for the Team
September is National Little League Month! An entire month dedicated to supporting the Little League teams in our community. Just like children show their skills at practice, parents show their support by supplying snacks before an after gams. Keeping the team nourished and hydrated can be a daunting task, but here are some tips to make it easier.
First, before purchasing snacks, it’s important to know any food allergies children on the team may have. Trying to avoid food containing nuts and dairy is a good start, but if you can, it’s always safer to confirm any allergies. Also, when selecting snacks, stick to prepackaged options. This selection will put other parents at ease and provide a safe way to serve food.
In addition to these tips, here are some healthy snack ideas any parent can bring to their child’s Little League game!
Cold Snacks
After working up a sweat on the field, a cold snack can really hit the spot. There are so many types of cold snacks, but here are a few healthy favorites.
- Applesauce squeezers: No need for a spoon, just pass them out and let the children suck down some refreshing applesauce.
- Apple slices: Prepackaged and ready to go, you’ll only have to worry about helping them open the bag.
- Bag of carrots: Usually including a ranch dipping sauce, these cold carrots will provide a fun crunch after any game.
- Yogurt tubes: If there are no dairy allergies on the team, yogurt tubes or Go-Gurt is another fun, healthy snack that comes in Nickelodeon themed flavors.
- Cheese Sticks: Who doesn’t love the satisfaction of pulling apart a stick of string cheese?
Room Temperature Snacks
Keeping your team’s snacks cold throughout the duration of a game or practice can be challenging. That’s why room temperature snacks are always a popular choice at Little League games. It can be challenging to stay healthy when grabbing snacks from the cupboard, so here are a few options to get you started.
- Clementines: Also known as Cuties, these small treats are fun to peel and to eat!
- Granola bars: Mini granola bars are a filling and sneaky way to put chocolate into something healthy.
- Kraft SnackFUNS: This new child-friendly snack comes in three fun varieties, strawberry waffles, s’mores and cookies & crackers.
- Pretzels: This popular salty snack comes in prepackaged mini bags, making it very easy to distribute.
- Dried fruit: Ranging from cherries to strawberries, dried fruits are a sweet and healthy snack children will enjoy – most popular dried fruit for children – classic raisins.
- Mini muffins: Some mini muffins are considered unhealthy, but these strawberry yogurt mini muffins are made with real strawberries and are a good source of Calcium and Vitamin D.
Cold Beverages
Along with bringing food, it’s always important to stay hydrated during a Little League game. With large, sugary drinks often having adverse effects on children’s health, making the right choice when it comes to hydration isn’t always easy. To help, here are some of our favorite drink recommendations.
- Bottled water: Absopure Plus, vapor-distilled water with added electrolytes, is changing the hydration game. The 500ml 24 pack would be a perfect choice to bring so everyone gets their own bottle of water.
- Juice boxes or pouches: Sipping a squeezebox is especially refreshing after a game or practice. Stick with classic apple juice or mix it up with some fruit punch organic juice pouches.
- Sports drinks: Gatorade Thirst Quencher mini sports drinks will keep children hydrated and having fun. Plus, what child doesn’t love blue drinks?
Next time it’s your turn to bring snacks to Little League, don’t panic! Just remember to find out if there are any allergies on the team and then use our list as inspiration. Instead of bringing cupcakes and soda, bring some cold, healthy snacks and a 24 pack of Absopure.
