10 Tips for a Healthier You This Year
New year, new you. The New Year provides us with a clean slate and the chance to reflect upon what we’d like to change for the better. From adopting a positive attitude to healthy eating and drinking habits, below are 10 tips to consider for a healthier you. Rather than going zero to 60, try slowly integrating these healthy tips into your daily life for best results.
1. Eat Well Without Indulging
We often label foods as “good” and “bad”, but abruptly eliminating the “bad” foods from our diet can backfire, as food is often a source of enjoyment and pleasure. Be mindful of the foods you’re consuming, and try to meet the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Enjoy the “bad” foods in moderation without overindulging.
2. Take Your Vitamins
Eating five servings of fruit and vegetables a day sounds ideal, but sometimes the food on your plate falls short and doesn’t contain adequate amounts of nutrients like calcium, vitamin D and potassium. Although food comes first, vitamins and mineral supplements should be added to your balanced diet to fill the nutrient gaps. Taking a multivitamin that provides 100% or less of the recommended daily value, rather than taking a cocktail of individual supplements, is the safest and best way to fill the nutrient gaps in your diet.
3. Get a Physical
Exercising more is arguably one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. It’s also one of the most difficult to stick to since we tend to set unrealistic goals for ourselves. Try starting small by going for a walk, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or going for a leisurely bike ride. Work your way up from those small changes by joining a gym, signing up for fitness classes, or doing cardio and strength workouts from the comfort of your own home.
4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Staying hydrated is one of the most important factors to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. There are many ways to increase your water intake: replace soda with water, add fresh fruit to your water for added natural flavoring, or try Absopure Cap10 All Natural Sparking Mineral Water. Need an extra boost? Try Absopure Plus, our electrolyte water.
5. Make Time for You
We spend good portion of our day focusing on the needs of others, whether it be our family members, significant other, friends or coworkers. Carve out a portion of each day and dedicate it to yourself. What you do with this time is up to you: reflect on your needs and wants, read a book, journal about your day, meditate.
6. Pack Snacks
Planning for a mid-day snack attack can be difficult if you’re someone who is constantly on the go or works 8 or more hours a day. Think before you leave the house and throw a simple, low-calorie, nutrient-dense snack in your purse or briefcase so you can refuel without heading to the vending machine. Ideal snacks include hummus with pita or crisp vegetables, an apple with peanut butter, or a handful of raw almonds. Don’t forget to pair Absopure Packables with your nutrient-dense snack.
7. Unplug After Work
We live in the era of social media, texting, emailing, smartphones and tablets. As wonderful as technology is, this can sometimes become overwhelming. Learn to live in the moment, instead of obsessively checking Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It’s okay to tuck your phone away or leave it in another room so you can enjoy quality time with yourself and the people around you.
8. Cook Often, Eat Out Less
Going out to eat can be a fun social activity, but it usually does damage on your wallet and waistline. Cooking meals at home will teach you how to control your portions and how to use healthy, nutrient-rich ingredients. It will also strengthen your chef skills and minimize your food budget.
9. Adopt a Positive Attitude
Mental health is not to be forgotten when embracing a healthy lifestyle. Accept the things you cannot change and reflect on opportunities to grow. Push away the negative thoughts and think in terms of, “I can”, “I will” and “I did”. Recognize your accomplishments and praise yourself for them – you deserve it.
10. Drink Black Coffee
Cut empty calories when drinking coffee by ditching the sugar and fattening creamers. If the bitterness of black coffee seems daunting, try replacing creamer with almond milk for low calorie flavoring. Drinking a hot cup of coffee will also keep you alert throughout the day when you need a little pick-me-up at work.
