Fun Activities for Children to Beat the Heat

With the sun shining bright and summer break in full swing, it can be challenging to keep your little ones cool and entertained during those really hot days. Children are more likely to have their health impacted by the heat, especially when exposed to temperatures over 90 degrees, making it extra important to keep them out of the scorching sun. Creatively turn a sluggishly hot day into a day of sweet memories with these refreshing and fun activities for children to beat the heat.

Homemade Ice Cream

There is nothing like a cold, refreshing, sweet treat to beat the heat! Making simple vanilla ice cream is a fun, hands-on activity that is inexpensive and easy.

You’ll need:

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup milk (whole, 1% or 2%)
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–3 cups ice
  • ½ cup kosher salt or rock salt
  • 1 quart-sized zipper-style freezer bag
  • 1 gallon-sized zipper-style freezer bag

Directions:

  1. Pour the sugar, milk, cream, and vanilla into a quart-sized freezer bag and seal it securely.
  2. Fill a gallon-sized freezer bag with ice and salt. Place the sealed quart-sized bag inside the gallon bag with the ice and salt, then seal the gallon bag securely.
  3. Wear gloves and hold the top and bottom of the gallon bag to protect your hands from the cold. Shake the bag vigorously from side to side for 5-10 minutes or until the cream mixture in the quart bag solidifies.
  4. Remove the quart bag from the gallon bag of ice, and quickly wipe the outside to remove any salty water.
  5. Using scissors, cut one corner at the bottom of the quart bag and squeeze the ice cream into a serving dish. This will create a delicious soft-serve ice cream.
  6. Decorate as desired, perhaps with hydrating fruit slices, and enjoy immediately.

Eating ice cream can trigger a thirsty feeling due to the high sugar content quickly entering the bloodstream, reducing water in the body and signaling the brain to rehydrate. It’s important to drink water after enjoying your freshly made ice cream to combat this effect. Pair the delicious treat with a refreshing, ice-cold bottle of Absopure Purified Drinking Water to help you stay hydrated.

Indoor Picnic

Some summer days can be unbearably hot or dangerously stormy. Staying inside can be a bummer without a plan, but not when you’re having a fun indoor picnic! Set up your living room like a park picnic, with a blanket on the floor and a basket of yummy finger foods. Pick hydrating fruits like watermelon, strawberries, and grapes to complement mini sandwiches. Add more healthy snacks like carrots and hummus or celery and peanut butter.

For a refreshing drink, Absopure 6.5oz Packables is the perfect size for little hands! Although it’s not quite the same as a scenic outdoor picnic, the change of scenery and themed spread will get children excited to eat lunch and stay hydrated, even if it’s inside.

Other Indoor Adventures

Your local library is a treasure trove of activities to keep children entertained and out of the scorching heat. Storytime can get kiddos (and you) to relax in air conditioning for the afternoon while enjoying tales from faraway lands. Younger children can listen as helpful librarians read their favorite stories, and older children can go off on their own to dive into their favorite series.

Many public libraries host morning and afternoon craft time too, where little ones can create free art projects to take home. Select libraries also show movies for children to enjoy, so be sure to contact your library for a full list of summer activities!

Splashy Summer

When the heat isn’t too intense, venture outside for some splashy fun in the sun. Slather on that SPF and keep a cooler filled with your favorite Absopure product to stay refreshed in the heat. Here are a couple of fun outdoor activities that are sure to keep everyone cool.

Spray Bottle Freeze Tag

Have spare spray bottles around the house? Find one with a strong stream, fill it up with ice-cold water, and hand it off to whoever is “it”. When “it” tags their next victim, they’ll spray them with water to freeze them in place. This is a fun spin on the classic game of tag everyone can enjoy!

Homemade Slip and Slide

In a grassy and flat area, lay down a tarp or plastic sheeting around 20-50 feet long. If you have pool noodles, place them on the sides of the tarp with duct tape for a safe bumper. Use ground stakes to hold the tarp or sheeting in place for safety. Then, just add water and get to slippin’ and slidin’ the afternoon away.

Keeping the kiddos cool and entertained this summer doesn’t have to be a challenge. With these fun activities for children to beat the heat, you’ll keep your little ones happy, active, and refreshed all season long. Don’t forget to stay hydrated with Absopure, the perfect companion for all your summer adventures!
