Pet Hydration: 4 Facts You Need to Know
July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month – a time dedicated to showing the importance of proper hydration in your pet’s life. Without water, your pet’s body – much like our own bodies – will not be able to function as it’s supposed to, leading to potential health issues.
To help keep this important issue top of mind, here are four pet hydration facts that you should know.
What does water do for pets?
In many cases, animals are made up of as much or more water than humans. This makes proper pet hydration vitally important. Among other things, water helps prevent infection and disease, increase energy levels, maintain stable body temperature and blood circulation, filter waste, process food and speed up recovery time from sickness, surgery or injury.
How much water should your pet drink daily?
If you’re wondering how much water to give your pet on any given day, the ASPCA recommends at least one ounce of water for each pound of body weight. Depending on other factors like temperature and amount of exercise your pet performs, more water may be necessary. Especially in the summer months, it’s important to keep a close tab on your pet’s water intake.
What type of water is best for pets?
These days, many people prefer to give their pet bottled water over tap water because of taste preferences. Giving your pet filtered water is also an excellent option, as it eliminates any impurities and leaves a crisp taste.
How can you tell if your pet is dehydrated?
A survey by PetSafe® found that more than 70% of pet owners wouldn’t know how to tell if their pet was dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration in pets include:
- Sunken eyes
- Lack of energy or enthusiasm
- Loss of appetite
- Dry mouth
If you think your pet is dehydrated, give them fresh, clean water and take them to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
