6 Spring Sports to Get Your Kids Involved in This Year

In just a few short weeks, the chilling memories of a harsh, cold winter will thaw into warmer weather and cabin fever will soon be replaced with spring fever.

Being cooped up all winter is tough on everybody—especially children. It’s important to get your kids active and moving again after a long winter of inactivity. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that kids and teenagers get at least one hour of physical activity every day, and the upcoming spring sports season provides plenty of opportunities to help your child stay active.

Now is the perfect time to get your kids involved in some spring sports and outdoor activities that are not only good for physical fitness, but also promote personal development and build strong character. Check out our list of activities that can provide your kids with some outdoor fun this coming spring:

  • Baseball and softball: Our national pastime is the perfect outdoor activity for your kids. Not only is it a great blend of aerobic exercise and hand-eye coordination, but it also helps your little sluggers understand the value of teamwork.
  • Soccer: Few sports get your kids up and running around quite like soccer does. Not only will this provide an incredible cardiovascular workout, but soccer also helps your kids fine-tune their fine motor skills.
  • Track and field: Speaking of running, track and field is an often-overlooked opportunity for your kids to enjoy a variety of physically intensive, but fun, activities. From sprinting to jumping and throwing, track and field has something for everyone.
  • Lacrosse: With a loyal and growing group of dedicated young players, lacrosse is a great activity for active athletes, as well as for kids looking to try something new. Lacrosse provides a great aerobic workout combined with hand/eye coordination and help kids learn the value of working together.
  • Kayaking: If you live near water, kayaking is a fantastic alternative (or compliment) to the other activities listed here. Kayaking helps your kids learn how to work together in small groups while providing a great upper body workout.
  • Geocaching: What kid doesn’t like a good game of hide-and-seek? Geocaching can help your kids get up and exploring the world around them as they search for knick-knacks hidden throughout the area. It’s a great way to combine technology with an activity like hiking or bike riding to create a fun activity the whole family can enjoy.

Staying hydrated is even more important when your kids are active outdoors. Make sure your kids are drinking plenty of water, and be careful with so-called kids’ sport drinks. Ensure they have a bottle of water with them and encourage them to drink from it often.

What are some other fun outdoor activities your kids enjoy doing in the spring?
